Background

RichCity Idol is a student-organized singing competition between ten representatives from high schools in the Richmond School District. The collaborative effort among students from all parts of Richmond has been a tremendous contributor to the success of this event thus far, while instilling district-wide collaboration and community spirit. With the leadership of Martin Hui and Natasha Jung, the RichCity Idol Organizational Committee was formed in January of 2004. As head-coordinators, Martin and Natasha’s vision was to convey the importance of inter-school spirit and community involvement by setting a bright example, forging a lasting tradition that would have a significant impact for further years. Since 2004, RichCity Idol has had no shortage of talented individuals to carry on the responsibilities of running the show. The group of former coordinators includes Frankie Angai, Gabriel Law, Tina Lu, Herman Wong, Leanne Chew, Edmond Leung, Jane Zhang, Isabel Wong, Vineet Deo, and Anna Zhao. Throughout RichCity Idol’s eight-year existence, thousands of dollars have helped benefit both local and international charities such as the Enspire Foundation, Chimo Crisis Services, Richmond School Response Team in support of Free the Children, Canadian Red Cross benefiting the Haiti relief fund, and most recently in 2011, the Ride to Conquer Cancer in support of Team Bodin. This year’s 2012 coordinators Jennifer Liu, Joanne Angai, and Justin Uyeno are excited to deliver yet another unbelievably entertaining show to celebrate the 9th year of Richmond’s youth singing tradition.

Charity

RichCity Idol has not only defined itself as a for-youth, by-youth event to “Showcase Richmond’s Singing Youth,” but also as a charity event, donating all proceeds to a chosen charity. In 2005, the Enspire Foundation, received over $1000 to support their cause from RichCity Idol. In 2006, RichCity Idol raised $2500 in joint efforts with the Richmond Schools Response Team (RSRT)and $3500 in 2007.

In 2010, all proceeds went towards the Red Cross Relief for Haiti.

In 2011, The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer is a powerful movement one of hope, healing, celebration and optimism where thousands of cyclists join together to raise funds and awareness in order to conquer cancer. It is a unique fundraising event benefiting the BC Cancer Foundation, a B.C.-based charity that raises funds for the BC Cancer Agency – a province-wide, population-based cancer control organization. The funds you raise stay in B.C. and benefit cancer patients across all of British Columbia. Funds from The Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer support groundbreaking cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency, focused on advancing new understanding of cancer with the goal of developing new therapies to extend and save more lives.

This year, the money that the show raises will go towards BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. This charity helps aid seriously sick and injured children throughout British Columbia with their many centres and facilities. BCCHF is the leading facility in BC that helps and researches child health as well as providing expert care. Over 200,000 children are tended to every year by the major treatment and rehabilitation services provided by the BC Children’s Hospital. The BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s main interests are to work towards “improving quality outcomes and providing better value for patients”, “promoting healthier populations”, and “contributing to a sustainable health care system”.
